I didn't have a/c either, until I went away to UGA, 1966. I now simply cannot believe we lived through those summers. Guess we just didn't know any better. Lots of iced-tea and fans blowing. Nothing much hotter than southern 100 degree days and nights with 80% humidity.

The last time I visited Alabama (July 2000) we were there in the midst of 13 straight days of 100+, coupled with thunderstorms that knocked out the lights and a/c for hours. I'll never go back in the summer again.
