Leno Hints at Post-Tonight Show Network Switch

In an interview with USA Today, Tonight Show host Jay Leno confirms that he is "definitely" leaving the NBC late-night staple in 2009.  But the comedian hints that the departure might not be the end of his career as a television host.

Although Conan O'Brien will take over The Tonight Show in 2009, Leno says he isn't ready to permanently trade his sports coat for mechanic's overalls.

"I am definitely done next year — with NBC," he says, sitting in a huge recliner in his poster-strewn shop office. Would he go to another network? Leno just smiles. "I'm not a beach guy, and the last time I was in my pool was to fix a light. Don't worry, I'll find a job somewhere."

As for all that Tonight Show money, Leno still has it.  All of it.

"I had two jobs as a kid, one at a fast-food restaurant and one at a Ford dealership. And I'd put the money from one job in one pocket and spend it. And the other paycheck I'd save," he says. "I do that now. I have always banked my Tonight Show money and lived off the stand-up. I have one credit card, no mortgage, and I don't lease."

Re: Leno Hints at Post-Tonight Show Network Switch

Saw Leno doing "Headlines" the other day.  He held up a clipping someone had sent him that said "Jay Leno, talk show host on ABC".
He just gave his long deadpan pause, then, smiling, he said something like:   "That's wrong.............for now".

NBC replacing Jay with Conan seems like a mistake second only to CBS's hiring Couric.

I cannot figure out why they're so gung-ho to get Leno out of there.  They say Conan would leave to another network and they're doing it to protect themselves from that, but to me it seems like it would be much worse to have Leno competing against you from another network than it would to have Conan doing it.

Frank, I guess you and I are just too intelligent to run a network.  hmm

Maybe it's the same former Fox executives who dumped Arsenio Hall for some unknown radio hosts for their late-night talk show.

I can't find a link anywhere, but at one point, there were somewhat confirmed rumors that should Conan not be handed the job next year, NBC would be forced to buy out his contract for around $40 million.  Not exactly chump change for NBC.

Maybe NBC could make him an offer he couldn't refuse.  wink
