FCC May Require HDRadio and Sirius XM Radio Synergy

The FCC may require that any hardware resulting from the Sirius XM merger be capable of also receiving HD Radio signals, and that future HD Radio hardware be satellite ready.

Among the issues the FCC is seeking comment on are the effect of any receiver requirements on the development of HD Radio, the impact on the cost and performance of these new satellite receivers, and establishing an appropriate timeframe for compliance. The Commission is also studying the impact of such a requirement on competition between HD Radio, satellite services and other audio technologies as well as the cost impact on radio manufacturers, auto manufacturers and consumers.
