DVR Chatter

Now thats cool looking.  I want one...or two!  What is the HD space on the Comcastic model?  I see that it can have 3 types of HD's...160/250/320.  Lemme guess...it has 160?

Correction... I just found the capacity info...I got the 320 GB hard drive.  woo hoo  LOL....heck we never came over about 80% on the 3412... but it's nice to know.

They gave me a new remote, darker grey one. HOWEVER, before I programed a new DVR into my Harmony Remote, I found I can use it as is. So I assume, either one will work.

Hard to really compare pictures because I also got a new LCD TV. I SEEMS to be a bit better though.

By the way...I had the recorder set to tape the Niners football game today...Well, when I returned home, I found the clock on the DVR showed 2:30, but we returned home at 4:10.  When I turned on the TV, I had live audio...but the screen was stuck on an ad that said  "COMCAST...the New High Speed Internet".. and the box was FROZEN.  Couldn't even do a simple power off, or swap, or access recorded programs. Had to do the all to familar with Comcast  "UNPLUG" and lose the guide for the reminder of the night.  Nice.

I just have an eerie feeling that this box is going back soon.

R.I.P  DCX3400   Returned it.  They only had DCT3412s.  Now I'm back to 120GB.  Once again, Comcastic office had a line out the door...mostly people returning boxes.  I asked for another DCX but the guy said they don't have any. I told him yeah I bet they all came back.  He just smiled.

The box would freeze. In this case, for example, I would  come home an notice the clock on the box was several hours slow.  Turned on the TV and there was audio but the video was frozen on the screen (fortunately the TV was off).  The box apparently did nothing during that time because I had recordings set during that time period and they did not record. Had to do an unplug/plug reset.  That happend a couple of times in a couple week period.  Another thing, though it didn't seem to hurt anything, the 'messages' indicator lit up, but I had no messages and it would not go away.

It's a nice looking box though.  LOL .  Much smaller than the older ones, and it's  black. I read that people have HDMI problems with it, they get a green screen. I was using component so didn't experience that.

I just feel  cheated... because I went from 120GB HDD to 160 in the 64xx series...then up to 320 GB. Now down to 120 GB.  The person at the Comcastic office told me my 3412 is 160 GB, but it isn't. It's the series I. And he said  "Oh these 3412's are the best of all of them. They work great".  We'll see about that.

Recording too many HD channels?  Shame on you, Ned.  I got a TiVo HD in January with 1TB internal and added a 500GB external drive, so that I don't even think about running out of space.

Just for fun...here's the latest:

So I got to the Comcast office a while before they opened. At first I was the only one in the parking lot. Brought my IPOD and started watching a movie to keep me occupied.  They opened on time and I was second in line... got to the desk and asked for the person I was supposed to ask for. It was her. I told her she is supposedly holding a dcx3400 for me. She says yep. Also got a DCT3416 for ya. I told her I only want the dcx3400. Am I a glutton for punishment or what ?

So got it home....went HDMI this time instead of component.  Well...about 30 minutes into the starting up process I noticed the box showed any give channel, but the program on the TV didn't match what was on the box.  Heeeeeere we go.  Called Comcastic...the person says oh just give it an hour and it will all catch up. I disagreed with him, since the guiding was filling up as normal, showed normal listings, etc.  So he says just wait...so I did. No change. Called again. This time got a  very helpful person.  She said she never heard of such a problem, but said I'll stay on phone with ya til we figure this out...she notices having been having lots of problems (well yeah !!).  So she tries a few different things. Nothing is happening. She sends resets, nothing happens. She says my box should now be displaying whatever...I tell her I don't think
you're getting through to my box. Then she says..oh wait..she says here's something about channel matching/lineup or something. Let's try this..if it doesn't work...I'm sending a lead tech to your house NOW.
It worked !! So  about 36 hours into it, it's working fine.

Oh...I kept the DCT3412...just in case...over the weekend. The lady on the phone the previous day said to keep it, she'll credit my account for one full month, including the price of a second box.


OK...so you're thinking...geez...is this guy EVER satisfied ? Well for now I am.

I DO however (there he goes) have a question about HDMI vs. Component settings on the cable boxes, handshaking and stuff.  I start a new thread for that.

Maybe this could be a TV sitcom.   New series, this fall.... Comcast and the OCD Customer.

It never ends with this company.  So the new DCX3400 is working ok after one week. Today I bring back the DCT3412 I was holding as a spare.  I tell the comcastic clerk this is not active on my account..please DO NOT INACTIVATE the DCX3400.  Well you know where  this is  going..... I get home...the DCX3400 is "One moment please" no matter what I try to do.  I call.  Lots of static on the phone line and the Comcastic clerk , says, yes I have a bad phone cable....I'm trying to hold it while I talk to you....geeeezzz.
So he says oh your DCX3400 is not an active device on our network.  YIKES !!!!!!!!!!!!    So he reset it...of course the guide has to reload for ever...but it's back....
