One thing to do is leave the power on all the time.  The box functions better. Anyway, even when you 'power off', the power really isn't off. The disk is still running, etc. It just shuts off the display panel mostly. The red light on the left is for messages. The red light on the right is when something is recording on the channel other than the one you are watching.

Thanks to Frank, this forum has lots of info.  Just have a look around and ask away !!  This is a very informative forum and very friendly, unlock some other forums I have looked at and people are snooty and get on your case for asking stupid questions.  Heck just ask the people around here..I ALWAYS have stupid questions.

And you are right...Comcast gives you very little help or information.

I guess it depends on what remote control you are using. The one that Comcast gives you has buttons on the top for tv or cable. Pressing the cable button first tells the remote to control the box. So the power button will turn the box on/off.  Pressing the TV  button will tell the remote to operate the TV. BUT...you have to program the remote to tell it what kind of TV you have. Not sure if that is what you are asking about.  I have a HARMONY remote, which you program to run all devices. I simply press a button that says "WATCH TV" and the TV powers on.

The red dot only comes on when you have new messages from Comcast.  I'm not sure what messages you're expecting it to respond to, but Comcast sometimes sends out messages to the boxes to inform users of unimportant things like pay-per-view wrestling.

The messages are mostly advertisements for pay-per-view programs coming up, such as  boxing matches. They just call them messages instead of ads.

Go to the main menu.  There is a box that says "Messages".
I'll bet it's an advertise for a boxing match or other PPV.

Others have complained of this "feature" of the DCH3416.  Perhaps it will be fixed with a later release of firmware or software.
