The article was reporting TiVo's financial results for the first quarter of this year (1st ever quarterly profit):
Subscribers declined 1.7 percent to 4.34 million as the number of TiVo
customers signed up through the DirecTV satellite service declined. But new
subscribers from Comcast starting in August will begin to replace the lost
DirecTV users, Chief Executive Tom Rogers said.
Using Google news search (news.google.com) for "Tivo quaterly profit", I just found this article, which shouldn't require login. It gives more detail:
TiVo is also making some progress in getting its DVR service integrated into
the set-top boxes of cable operators. Trials with Comcast Corp., the nation's
largest cable provider, are under way. Though a commercial rollout of the
product didn't emerge in the spring as earlier promised, the first deployment
is now slated to launch in the New England area in August, Rogers said.

With the loss of DirecTV as a distributor, TiVo’s deals with Comcast and Cox Communications — which expects to roll out TiVo by the end of the year — are a key part of its growth strategy.
With a strategy like "deals with Comcast" Tivo is doomed.

Let's hope you're all part of the 3% that will even see this update through the end of 2008! Doesn't look likely unless you're in New England. Can this be right?
TiVo may reach as many as 3 percent of Comcast's DVR subscribers in 2008, Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Michael J. Olson said today in an interview. Olson estimated that Comcast would have 6.66 million DVR subscribers next year.
So only about 200,000 of Comcast DVR users would even have access to the update as far away as 15 months from now? Yikes.

Maybe they think only 3% will be interested after this long wait -- the rest will have moved on to TiVoHD or S3. But I'll bet it takes at least a year to make it over the Rockies to the west coast.

Is there any evidence that any actual human being has gotten this update. Engadget said "the New England market of Comcast users can now get their hands on TiVo STBs" last week, yet I'm able to find nothing in the usual places.
