TIP: How to Get Gum Out of Your Dryer

Recently, washed and dried some clothes with gum in one of the pockets.  It went through the washing cycle no problem, but melted in the dryer.  Here's a tip to quickly (before your wife finds out) remove gum that has melted inside your clothes dryer: Use Wet Dryer Sheets.

I wet the dryer sheets, rubbed the melted chewing gum, and presto - no more gum.

Thought I'd share.

Did the sheets dissolve the gum or lift it from the dryer surface?

A little of both.  I guess it dissolved it, but it was really like rubbing an eraser over the gum.  There was slight residue from the dryer sheets, but a paper towel wiped that away immediately.

Re: TIP: How to Get Gum Out of Your Dryer

Here's another tip:  If you ever forget a pen in the pocket of a pair of pants, and those pants go through the dryer, chances are, not only will every article of clothing in that dryer load be destroyed, but you'll also leave a nice coating of ink on the inside drum of the dryer.  It gets better.  If you don't remove said ink, the next time you run the dryer with clothes in it, the heat from the dryer will warm that ink up and get it on subsequent loads of laundry.

The only way we were able to remove that ink was to drip Mr. Clean Magic Erasers in acetone (nail polish remover, highly flammable), and scrub like hell.  Be sure to take regular breaks, because all that acetone in a confined space can create quite the buzz.  Oh, and be sure to air out your dryer for a good week or so before using, since acetone is highly flammable, and dryers are powered by electricity and all.

Looks like you guys should start checking pockets before you wash clothes.

I would buy a new dryer before I'd ever put anything as flammable as nail polish remover into one.
