3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsSo the power went off today for an hour or so. I start up my 3412 DVR this evening and all the pre-recorded shows are gone. 100% empty. The series prioritys and scheduled programs are gone too. Favorite channels are still there. Power has gone out before and all that happens is that a show that is recording at the time is split into two segments, I've never lost everything like this. I leave my 3412 on all the time. Any ideas how to recover? I already tried unpluging the box and restarting it. What am I doing wrong? I guess I will just have to re-schedule all my shows all over again tomorrow when the directory finally reloads. Offline #2 01-21-2007 9:30:36 AMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsUnfortunately, it's all gone. It appears your box thought the drive was corrupt and reformatted it. The drive contains the DVR related settings such as recorded and scheduled programming, along with the priority list. Favorites and other guide-related settings are stored in NVRAM. Re: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsYes, I've had the new software you describe for a while now. The guy at Comcast refreshed the box but no luck. Recorded programs and series recording setup list are still gone. What a pain re-doing the series recordings is under the Comcast system. Offline #4 01-21-2007 11:15:09 AMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsThat sucks. Assuming that: Offline #5 01-21-2007 11:44:52 AMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programs
Despite what the Comcast guy says, I can't think of any good reason to ever turn the DVR off. Re: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsMy 6412 did the exact same thing back last October: Offline #8 01-26-2007 2:59:00 PM
Re: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsSo yesterday, about 5 days after the problems I related above, my 3412 stoped doing anything but showing current programs. It showed the directory of recorded programs but wouldn't play them. It would pause a live show but not restart. If I changed channels, live programming would resume. The hard drive DVR part of the box appeared to be dead. I called it in to Comcast at around 8PM last night and by 12 noon today the repair guys were here and I have a brand new 3416 box working corectly and no cost to me. I guess there are advantages to renting rather than owning the box. On this one, the Comcast service was outstanding. I'll just wait until someone reverse engineers one and posts how to build your own (I've already got an external FW/USB 2.0 enclosure that I'm not using). Re: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsNow I'm wondering if leaving the DVR on all the time is such a good idea. My 3412 was about a year and a half old and left on all the time and it acted like the hard drive died. When you leave a computer on, the drive is allways spinning but it isn't writing on two tracks all the time like the dvr is. With the mute problem solved, I am wonering if turning it off when not in use may extend the life of the drive. Offline #12 01-28-2007 10:59:03 AMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programs
All turning it off does (by off, I mean with the power button) is put it in standby. It just stops buffering data, but the drive is always spinning. This will help a little bit as it reduces wear on the head movement and a bit of heat. You can get a similar effect by putting both tuners on digital music channels, although any recordings will obviously change that. DW went to watch her morning news program this AM and noticed there were no recordings. The 6412 II in the bedroom was just fine though.... Offline #14 04-30-2007 1:25:27 PMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsI'm on my 2nd DVR from Comcast in Atlanta (Buckhead - Vinings Headend I think). Well, I typically am gone on the weekends and when I show back up on Sunday, the recordings are GONE! This is my 2nd box that I've been on and I do admit - I turn the box off when I leave - I'm a electricity conserver. Offline #15 04-30-2007 1:39:10 PMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programs
I distinctly remember someone hooking up the box to a power consumption meter and then posting about it here (I did a search and couldn't find it though - sounds like an andyross-type techy experiment - was it you andy?). Whoever it was posted that the difference in power usage between the box being on and the box being off is negligible (or was so little as to not be measurable). It makes sense. All the power button does is turn off the video / audio output. Even the USB power stays on with the power button off.
Hmmm...Are you a former exec BECAUSE customer issues got resolved to the customer's satisfaction. Given my experiences, that's not taken to very kindly by Comcast. Offline #16 05-01-2007 11:46:22 AMRe: 3412 Lost recordings and scheduled programsI'm the one who measured power usage. Search didn't find it because it was before the Great DVR Chatter Extinction Event back in aught 5. Offline |
