TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

What updates will this contain?  It mentions MRV, but it also says it isn't available at this time on Series 3 or HD.

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

The way I understand it from reading other venues, this is the update that makes the software capable of MRV (and TTG/TTCB), but those features won't be enabled until November.

I've also read that this "zips up" a lot of menu-related functions, too.

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

The previous update was 9.1.  Now comes word that TiVo is releasing 9.2 which adds official eSATA external drive support (previously you needed a simple remote hack to make it work) and fixes some bugs with 9.1 that I never saw on my Series3.  You'll also be able to watch Amazon Unbox download as they download rather than having to wait for the download to complete.

Can't accuse TiVo of standing still, or of letting bugs stand.

Having eSATA for the TiVoHD is awfully tempting.

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

Guess I jinxed myself by saying in an earlier post I've no problems with my S3.  Since getting the 9.1 update I've seen a good deal of pixelation in HD recordings.  Every other show has a five minute, or more, portion with blocky pixelation and freezes.   Never had the problem before 9.1.  I sure hope 9.2 fixes it.

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

Is that a common complaint with the S3 and 9.1?

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

You're doing cablecard recordings or OTA?

I ask for this reason: Most people (including me) would assume that this happens because the signal is too weak for the TiVo to handle (it's apparently more sensitive than cable company rentals), but I've also read (unproven theories) that it could happen because the signal is too hot.

Apparently (again, never had the problem so never had to test this) you can tell whether it's an issue with the incoming cable signal or with the TiVo by checking the "RS Corrected" stat in the cablecard diagnostics. A reading of "0" means its being caused by the incoming signal.   Another reading would mean it's being caused by the TiVo (i.e. it's a playback issue).

EDIT: Now that I read that back, it seems to be the opposite of what would make sense but (if I'm thinking logically) a reading of "0" WHILE you're getting pixelation would mean that you're getting signal problems that the TiVo doesn't know how to handle and correct.

Another symptom of this would be signal meter readings that fluctuate rapidly.

I've not had this issue, but I've read that the TiVo uses (obviously) higher quality components than the rental boxes and is therefore more sensitive to signal variations.

From what I've read around this net of ours, it effects the TiVoHD more than the Series3.

I use cablecards (moto's from Comcast).
RS Corrected reads 0 on both cards. I never checked that in the past, so I don't know if it is different now.  Signal strength reads 95, with no fluctuation.  SNR is 22db.
I really don't have a clue what the "RS Corrected" means as far as pixelation problems.
Not sure how I can reasonably check WHILE I'm getting pixelation, because it's only seen by me on playback of HD recordings....I never watch live.  Generally, the pixelation sort of occurs for about a 5 minute period in an hour show, randomly.
I haven't done any real analysis of when this is taking place, whether its while both tuners are recording, or what.

SNR of 22db is really low.  Should be in the low 30s.

Re: TiVo Fall 2007 Service Update

Now I'm beginning to wonder if I'd really miss OnDemand.  Very tempting.
