TIP: Dry Razor Blades Last Longer

I get pissed off every time I need to buy new razor blades.  And, since I started shaving my head as well as my face, I go through a lot of razor blades.  My current blade of choice is the Gillette Fusion.  I find that I can be a lot more free-wheeling with the razor and still get a close shave. I used to have to try and knock it down with an electric razor before using a blade, but with the Fusion I can cut out the electric step.  I refuse to buy into the whole "Power" trend though, so I save a little money by buying the non-powered Fusion blades.  They're still wildly expensive.

Writer Gregory Karp has done some research, and it appears you can extend razor blade life by drying the blade after use.

The concept is this: Razor blade dullness stems more from oxidation, microscopic rusting, than from contact with whiskers. Water that sits on blades between shaves causes the oxidation.

Corrosion can cause metal on the blade to flake off and the edge to become blunted and jagged. That results in blades pulling and tearing hairs instead of cleanly slicing through them.

[...]

A high-profile test of this happened when consumer-advocate radio host Clark Howard of Atlanta used a 17-cent disposable razor for an entire year. He said he extended blade life by blotting his razor dry with a towel after use.

Howard's report intrigued Atlanta resident Brian Cohn, who then tried it himself. Cohn said his results weren't quite as good but still amazing. Instead of blades lasting the usual 10 days to two weeks, his blades lasted five to six months.

[...]

Because the only evidence he had was anecdotal, he paid for testing research from an independent laboratory, 360-Degree Testing Service of Yonkers, N.Y. It tested a two-blade razor from Bic, a three-blade razor from Gillette and a four-blade razor from Schick.

The results?...[D]ry[ing] blades extended blade life an average of 122 percent, or more than double.

Dab (don't rub) if you're going to use a towel.

Hmmm.  What if you let the blade end sit in a small amout of alcohol?

Probably great for the metal and not so great for the "comfort strips" and other portions of the cartridge.

They've got my Fusion 4 pack for $18.50 shipped, while I can just stop into Walgreen's and get them for $12.99.  Not a good option for me.

Unless you're willing to take a chance on their guaranteed longer blade life, this site isn't a good option for anyone.  You obviously pay a bit more for the added service they provide beyond just selling blades.

Ahhhh - missed the who "cryogenics" deal.  Oops.  Spaced out, I guess.

Interesting.  You're saying that this cryogenic freezing makes for a noticeably better blade?

I never thought they did much anyway.

Re: TIP: Dry Razor Blades Last Longer

I used to have to change blades every four or five face shaves, and now, I can go upwards of 12-15 shaves per blade, which is a huge savings for me.  Obviously, YMMV, but it was worth it for me to give it a shot, so I've recommended it to anyone who might want to at least consider a cheaper option, even if it means risking $5 extra bucks on a set.  If you do end up giving these a try, do let me know what you think.

Well a portion of the cartridge does hold it onto the handle, which is a pretty useful function. tongue

Even if the comfort strip and little rubber spacers (on the Fusion) are totally useless, you're probably better off not having them begin to disintegrate in alcohol and continue to disintegrate as you drag them across your face.

Re: TIP: Dry Razor Blades Last Longer

I guess I was thinking of that little strip of stuff that's right next to the blades.  It's supposed to help lubricate (he he, he said lubricate) your beard.

I'm still using my old Atra.

Re: TIP: Dry Razor Blades Last Longer

Thought it would be worthwhile to let you know that this tip really works.  I attached a new blade on the day of this post, and have been using the same blade since without incident.  That's almost 3 weeks (I shave my face AND my head twice a week).  Previously, if I used a blade longer than a week, it would start to take chunks out of my head and face.

Guess you can believe some things you read on the internet.
