So it could be Lynux/Unix or DOS?

So far, my DVR is pretty much error free.  It's nothing like the bug-filled and lock-up-proned R15 I had from DirecTV.

I doubt if the internal OS is anything common. It's probably something unique and proprietary, although some items like the hard drive format could be based on Unix. Remember that they are designed so that the same software can be used on both new and old boxes.

So far, the new firmware/software I got last week has been pretty nice. I keep discovering new features, although I'm not 100% certain they were there before or not:
In the Guide, pressing GUIDE toggles between the grid and the single-channel list mode.
While watching a recording, INFO first just does a normal info bar. Hit it again, and you get the recorded program list. You can then get information on any of the programs as normal.

It has to reboot to do the update. When noticing an available update, it goes into download mode, with a DL and a spinning circle on the front panel display. It will then go through a few more codes as it flashes the ROM. It then reboots.

For me, there was a second reboot the next day. That might have been for some other reason. It's been stable otherwise. Response has generally been good. I haven't had any of those 20-30 second pauses, but do occasionally have some shorter ones, mainly when dealing with HD on both tuners and playing and HD recording.
