Opinions: My Sub is Sinking!

Here's something off topic, but I figure this is the perfect group.

I just moved and after setting up my home theater system, I noticed my subwoofer was making a static-rumbling sound.  The subwoofer is a amplified JBL 8-inch sub.  After it warmed up the noise dissipated, but left a continuous low-frequency low-level buzz.  My guess is a capacitor (or whatever) in the amp has dried up and is dying.

I just spotted a 12-inch amped Sony sub in a BB ad for $180.

The question is ... what sub would you recommend?  Any online shops you would recommend?

Joe

Have you checked all your cables? The hum may be due to a loose or bad cable or a signal cable running parallel to a power cord. Seems unlikely that your sub amp decided to die between houses.

Try changing cables/power cords and moving things around.

Also try kicking the damn thing hard enough to remove any doubt that it's broken, then buy the sub you linked, the 12"/200W Sony. It's on sale for $99 and is bound to be an improvement over the 8" JBL.

Re: Opinions: My Sub is Sinking!

What made me think it was an amp problem was the the sub being powered off for about two days.  When I plugged it up again, that's when the noise started.  After it warmed up, the noise decreased.

I should have mentioned that I disconnected the LFE line-level feed on the back of the sub (no signal going to the sub) and the noise remained.

The power cord is attached.

Re: Opinions: My Sub is Sinking!

Also, J&R and B&H Audio have some pretty good deals too.

Try plugging it in to a different outlet. Are you using one of the convenience outlets on your receiver? Try plugging it in to a wall outlet that's on a different circuit breaker than the outlet all your other stuff is plugged into. Use a heavy duty ext cord to reach another room if you have to.......if that doesn't work, go shopping.

Dirty power maybe... try the above suggestion by Sals.  If still a problem it may exist with the overall power supply into the house.  Try a power conditioner and if it clears up call your power company and tell them that their dirty power is wreaking havoc with your electronics.
