Any web domain owners here? How do you use them ?
Okay, so I'm messin' with a little web page via good old comcast.net. Not bad, just for fun.
So I thought hey why not buy a domain name. I'm just looking into how all that works.
For any of you who might have done it, live www.frank.com (lol), or www.wareagle.com, etc.
Does wherever you buy the domain name from let you set up the ACTUAL url forwarding, so that
for example, I have www.ghoofie.com actually go to home.comcast.net/user-id/site (comcast's naming).
I'm researching all this, but why re-invent the wheel if any of you have done this before.
Now back to my channel searching, waiting for Neutrogena commercials.

I register stuff through www.godaddy.com. After you register, you then have to find a web hosting company (or, in your comcast example, you don't). I don't know if it's any good any more, but I used to use www.findmyhosting.net to find a host with the right price and features. When you sign up for hosting, the hosting company will email you your login information for you account as well as the address of their name servers. These name servers are what tells "The Internet" where to find your domain. Then, you go back to your account at the registrar (www.godaddy.com in my example) and enter the name server information at the registrar. In 12-24 hours, when you type in your domain name, it'll go to the right place.
Godaddy also offers free hosting. You can use that to test, but they have their ads at the top of the page. There are a few free hosts, but as far as I know, you will have to show their ads to use them.
I don't know the full extent of how to go about pointing to a comcast page from a domain, but I bet someone does.

I was under the impression that the Comcast "PWP" web pages were limited to being accessed with their original, awkward Comcast address, but I may be wrong. I just tried to check on that, but navigating their help pages is too much for me. I thought that the domain name needed to be associated with a static ip address, rather than another domain name, but it's been a long time since I even considered getting my own domain name (they were fairly expensive then).
I used to have a site hosted on a server owned by a friend who has a software company in West Seattle, http://www.windowware.com, but the server died one day and he never replaced it. (My site was http://wareagle.windowware.com, but it is now a dead parrot, indeed.) I thought about transferring the contents over to Comcast, but at that time they had the screwy 25MB/email address storage plan, so the most I ever did was post a few granddaughter photos at http://home.comcast.net/~rubyboo. I believe they've been transitioning to 1GB storage, but I haven't worked up the energy to figure out their convoluted methods of web site hosting. What is your Comcast site's url? I tried ~ghoofie, but didn't get anywhere.

For Comcast, you can use their on-line uploading, with FrontPage, or a standard FTP client. For FTP, you set it to upload.comcast.net, and use your login and password.

Wareagle and andyross: I just started messing with the comcast PWP...it's pretty simple to use,
BUT it is very simple in what you get. I was just looking for a place to put a couple of my bands
songs and ended up with a webpage. But your absolutely right, the help isn't very great.
I'll have to research it further to see if Comcast will let me do the URL forward , if in fact, I register
a domain name.

I transferred the structure and some of the images from my old site to Comcast and realized two things:
1. Not having been updated since about 2000, everything is woefully out of date. A lot of work ahead to clear out the weeds.
2. Comcast hasn't migrated my personal space to the larger capacity, so it's still limited to 25MB. Bummer. I may just leave it as is until I get upgraded.

Maybe they're moving yours from the 25MB to the 1GB space. I just maxed out on moving stuff over to Comcast, and will have to wait until they give me access to the larger space before I can do much other than throw out garbage that's no longer relevant.

I already have the 1GB available. Comcast tech support is great. Just spent a 1/2 hour on live chat for the tech to tell me "It's POSSIBLE that updating is going on". So I keep asking, well can't you tell me if updating IS going on ? He just says he has no way of knowing. I can't even access links to my own files right now. But they can't tell me why. Oh well....better things to do right now anyway so I'll try later. It's COMCASTIC.

Thanks. It worked easily. And the forwarding started in about 1 hour (says it takes 12-24 hrs for
forwarding to take place.

Great! I should get over to GoDaddy and grab a domain name. Then I'll need to wait for Comcast to finally give me the remainder of my 1GB storage so I can clean up the structure before I assign it.

I don't like the idea that anyone can download pics or music files on the pages created with PWP though.
I know there is code to turn off right-click, and there are better ways of streaming the audio, instead of
linking to the files I uploaded. But I'm not ready to get into all the html......yet.
