Thank a Pennsylvanian For the Comcast Subsidy

Think your cable bill is high? Just imagine what it would be if Pennsylvania governor Fast Eddie Rendell hadn't paid the company $43,000,000 to build their new corporate headquarters in Center City Philadelphia.

If you like sarcastic commentary, Heyl is the guy for you on this topic.  Outraged emphasis mine.

I questioned the wisdom of state taxpayers kicking in money for a project benefitting the nation's largest cable concern, second-largest Internet service provider and fourth-largest phone service provider.

Now I know better.

When Rendell made his generous gift of your money to a signature building for a company that has generously donated to his campaign coffers over the years, little did anyone know that Comcast was about to fall on hard times.

[...]

In 2005, Comcast made only $928 million.

The company fared a bit better in 2006. But no rational person could conclude that a company that pocketed only $2.5 billion was in any way healthy.

The $2.6 billion the company took in last year proved beyond doubt that its long-term future was not assured.

When the building opened a few weeks ago, Comcast barely had the money necessary to install the world's largest four-millimeter LED screen in the building's lobby.

The video screen, 24 feet high and 83 feet wide, with 10 million pixels and offering five times the resolution of high-definition TV, is hard to miss.

I wonder if you can see the pixelation from compression on that screen.  smile
