TiVo Rolling Out Version 9.4 Update for Series3 / TiVoHD

TiVo is beginning to roll out Summer Software Update version 9.4 to Series3 and TiVoHD owners.

According to ZatzNotFunny, new features include:

* Play or Delete a Folder
Play or delete an entire folder of programs with a single button press (including kids shows, music videos ext). Highlight a folder and press PLAY to play all the shows in sequence. Pres CLEAR to delete the entire folder.

* Browse the Guide Any Time
Press the GUIDE button to display the program guide over what you’re watching: live TV, a previously recorded program, or even a video download.

* Jump Forward in the Guide
When the Guide is on-screen, press the ADVANCE to jump 24 hours ahead. Press INSTANT REPLAY to go back 24 hours.

* Find a Station in the Guide
Now you can search for a station “call sign” within the Guide, e.g. KQED, WPIX, MSNBC. When viewing the program guide, press ENTER to bring up Guide Options, then SELECT Find by call sign.

* Toggle Closed Captioning On and Off
The Closed Captioning icon in the Channel Banner now toggles closed captioning on and off.

* Review Thumb Ratings
To display a list of all programs that you have rated, select Find Programs, then TiVo Suggestions. Press ENTER to bring up the Review Thumbs screen

Browse the guide anytime and jump forward in the guide will be great.

I've already got the update.  The "24 hour advance" feature is nice, but I cannot use it to set up a recording.  Not sure if its just me or what, but when I use the guide advance and see a show I want to record, when I press "select" nothing happens, nor does my record button have any effect.  I also was thrilled to gain such a jump feature, but now a little less so. Seems like the major purpose of it, to set up a recording, is missing.  Whats up with that?  Maybe I've missed something.

The easy closed captions selection is also greatly appreciated and works well. That saves quite a few steps.

The entire folder-play feature will be nice when I want to transfer a set of shows over to my dvd recorder for burning to dvd.  Already used it to delete an entire folder.

Browsing the guide while watching a recording is great too.  No more having to go back inot now-playing to restart the show after leaving to check the guide.  Works as advertised.

What do they mean by "force a few connections". Is that going into settings and forcing it to connect with the tivo service? If it is, it didn't work for me. Still on 9.3.

That sucks.

Got the jump-ahead recording ability working. Possibly, it was low batteries in my remotes.  When I changed them, it starting working.   Seems strange, but that was my only action.
Anyhow, all the new changes seem to work quite well.  Very nice.

Yes, "forcing a connection" is as you described, using settings.  Forcing a connection may or may not work getting a system upgrade from Tivo.   If you just wait a while, it will show up on its own.  If you are really wanting to get it, you can force a connection every so often, but it typically won't really speed up the process by much.  Tivo will send it to you when they are ready.  They do a staggered release due to the strain on their network caused by sending out so many updates, and one's position in the line is kind of hit-or-miss.

You should get the update soon, either way.

Just my two cents and to share; the DirecTV HR-2x series has the following features:

* Play or Delete a Folder
Play or delete an entire folder of programs with a single button press (including kids shows, music videos ext). Highlight a folder and press PLAY to play all the shows in sequence. Pres CLEAR to delete the entire folder.

NEVER USED PLAY ENTIRE FOLDER, BUT HAVE USED DELETE BEFORE

* Browse the Guide Any Time
Press the GUIDE button to display the program guide over what you’re watching: live TV, a previously recorded program, or even a video download.

WORKS WITH ALL MENUS, GUIDES ETC CURRENTLY PLAYING PROGRAM GOES INTO A SMALL VIEW BOX (LIKE WHEN GUIDE BROWSING ON COMCAST'S BOXES).  ONE NEAT FEATURE IS THAT TRANSPORT CONTROLS ONLY AFFECT THE VIEW BOX EVEN WHILE IN GUIDE... YOU CAN STOP, PLAY, CHANGE CHANNELS ETC WITHOUT LEAVING THE GUIDE

* Jump Forward in the Guide
When the Guide is on-screen, press the ADVANCE to jump 24 hours ahead. Press INSTANT REPLAY to go back 24 hours.

ALLOWS ADVANCE/REVERSE IN 12HR INCREMENTS

Sort of odd that Tivo is adding features that have always been part of iGuide!!

You have always been able to view the program guide at any time. Playing a recording is treated just like viewing a channel. You can even toggle between a recording and 'live' TV by using the LAST/PrevCh button.

iGuide (and even the tan guide before it) have always had the DAY+/- buttons.

The wall between live tv viewing and recorded tv viewing has always been one of my pet-peeves with TiVo.  Glad to see it's going by the wayside.
