Car impound ?

So here's a good one...

I sold a non-running car, as is, in 2005.
I filled out and mailed the release of liability.

Today I got a notice, from a  police department,
250 miles away.  "MY" car has been towed,
driver arrested. So  OK...the car hasn't  been
registered by a  new owners..but the DMV
keeps me as latest owner all this time.

I had a funny overdue parking ticket from the city of Auburn, WA a couple of months ago.  My Washington car tag is AUBURN (for my alma mater).  The car hasn't been within 20 miles of Auburn, WA in its lifetime.  Turns out the ticket had the city name entered where the tag should've been.  All is well, after a phone call to the municipal court.
