6412 Phase III

Is Comcast offering the 6412 Phase III in the Chicago area?  If so, has anyone upgraded to it?, and if so, have you found any benefit?

Re: 6412 Phase III

I live in Aurora and got a Phase III when I switched from the regular digital box (w/o hd & dvr) in June.

I'm assuming you're asking about the difference from a Phase II to a Phase III, right?

Re: 6412 Phase III

Sorry, I should have been more clear.  I've had my 6412 for just over a year and don't know what phase box I have, 1 or 2.  Seems like a lot of people are upgrading and I was wondering what the phase III does thats better than the older 6412.  BTW, how can I tell what I have?  If it's a better unit and solves past problems, and its available in the Chicago area, I'll see about upgrading to it.
Thanks,
John

Re: 6412 Phase III

Are you paying the 9.99 monthly fee?  The III has dual HD's and I'm sure some other upgrades.  How reliable is the one you got?

jp

I have the phase III which I got about 2 months ago after my phase I box crapped out.

The phase III box has a fan for cooling the unit (my phase I box didn't and thats why it crapped out).

I also don't get anymore 12/31/1989 recordings and the new box doesn't freeze up as much.

Ummmm...  dual HD's......  I don't think so. dual tuners, just like the other phases, but not drives.

Re: 6412 Phase III

Are you guys absolutely sure the phase III has a cooling fan?  I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have one.  I definitely can't hear any fan noise coming from the box.  It used to lock up a couple times a day before I installed a fan behind my components to help it from overheating.  If it does have one, the fan must be so small its ineffective.

Oh yeah, and it does only have one 120GB hard drive.

Re: 6412 Phase III

I've had my 6412 for several months.
Can somebody please tell me how I check for the Phase # (I, II, or III)?
I'm ready today to change out my box for the 6412 III if I don't already have it.
I love using bleeding edge technology!

Re: 6412 Phase III

The P3 has SATA and HDMI ports on the back and a 'III' printed somewhere on the front. The P1 and P2 have a DVI port. To tell the P1 and P2, you have to look at the model number on a sticker on the bottom. P2's say DCT6412/2005. I think P1's say DCT6412/2000.

Some have reported the P3 has better analog pictures. With digital simulcasting being rolled out, it won't make a difference. Some have also reported audio issues, slow remote response, missing 30-second skip, etc.. Unless you need HDMI, there is no real reason to 'upgrade'. Unless you have a TV with an HDMI port, and want to send the audio and video to your TV with one cable, you can still use the old box with an adapter or a DVI-HDMI cable.

Thanks for this info.
The remote response can't be any slowing than what I getting now.
My 2 boxes are both P2s (DCT6412/2005).
Time to call Comcast of Arlington,Tx to see if I can bring them in for a switcheroo.

Yes, they have a fan. My first one would turn on the fan at very high RPM any time the ambient room temperature was 73 or more. It worked fine during the winter months, but when summer hit, the DVR had to go. It just made too much noise. I exchanged it for a new one and never hear it, but my DVR is on the top shelf of a rack, so it is well ventilated.
