No matter what I do, the volume level on my VCR copies of 6412 recordings is extremely low. Listening to them while using my A/V receiver works, since I can really crank up the colume on it, but just using a TV's speakers, the volume is low. Since I use many of these recordings in my classroom at school where I teach, this is a problem.

Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you have a stereo VCR. If not, you're only getting 1/2 the audio and that's your answer.

How are you outputting the sound to the VCR? I'm assuming the stereo L/R outputs. If you disconnect them from the VCR and connect those to your TV, is the sound low coming to the TV? If so, it's a problem with the 6412. If not, it's a problem with your VCR.

Of course, not having to make assumptions would help everyone here provide better answers.

Do you happen to have a space heater connected to the same circuit as the 6412?

You are right. . I should have made the spercifics of my situation clearer.

I do have a stereo VCR, and am using the the stereo L/R outputs. I will try connecting them to the TV as per your suggestion and see what happens.

The analog audio out on the box is adjustable. It's possible it's been set to a low level. You can temporarily disable the volume lock on the remote and use it to adjust the volume level:

There is also a setting in the cable box setup to locks the volume at a high level. Hit MENU twice to get to the main menu. Scroll down to Setup, then go to Audio Setup. Change Audio Output to 'TV Speakers'.

Thanks for the advice. A question: if I use the remote and adjust the volume level, or change the Audio Output in the Setup Menu to "TV Speakers", will that only affect the analog output? I listen to everything coming from the 6412 through digital coax feeding into my home theater system, and never use the TV speakers; the analog output is inly used for recording to the VCR.

The digital outputs are fixed, although there sometimes seems to be some interaction between them and the analog. You may want to leave the digital audio on when making the changes to see if it affects the digital.
