Lost recordings

When I looked at my 6412 today, I discovered all my recordings had vanished....it was 5 or 6 shows recorded in the last 2 days.
Then, I took a look at my scheduled recordings.....all gone.  I had the 6412 programmed to record, on average, 2 or 3 shows a day for the next two weeks.  Not a one was there.  Tried turning it off, then back...still all gone.

I proceeded to reschedule 4 shows for tonight (thurs).   I just checked and they all recorded.  Wonder if they will be there in the morning?

Anyone had this happen to them?

Re: Lost recordings

No, but I feel like that would entirely ruin my life.  I guess that makes me a TV junkie.  Like, certified.

Was anything else (Firmware, guide) different?

Makes me want to disconnect the cable overnight to avoid Comcastic update gremlins.

Re: Lost recordings

I'm basically lazy, and don't really keep up with which firmware I've got.  The guide looks identical.  It was not even doing it's common rebuilding of guide info....it did not have all those "to be announced" listings in the grid, so the program info was still there. Just my previously recorded stuff and dvr scheduling was GONE.

I checked this afternoon when I got home....the shows I recorded last night (after the vanishing recordings episode) were all there and seem to play fine.  All the reprogramming I did after losing my scheduling is still there also. I have no idea of what happened.
My confidence in the 6412 is a bit shaken.  Luckily, I had backups of all the shows on my various Tivos.

I don't have any backup plans per se. I have on occaision set a vcr in another room to record a program because my wife would be more upset than I about a recording messing up.  And believe me, it HAS happened.  I've had messed up audio, messed up video, program freezing  on various records. Not too often though.  I don't wanna get too hooked where I feel I have to have backup recordings, just in case.

But the new season of The O.C. starts soon and Desperate Housewives is in full swing...so I may have to change my thinking.  Just in case.    wink

Re: Lost recordings

It's possible there was some major hard drive corruption and it had to reformat it. It's also remotely possible that a hard reset command was sent to your box by mistake.

Um, yeah, me too.  Its really my wife that demands the backups!  ;-)

Realistically, tho, I would be upset at missing an episode of Desp.Housewives, or Jericho, or Heroes, Lost, or the Unit, to name a few.
I have 3 networked Tivos, so its no big deal for me to set up season passes and let them grab backup copies.  My experiences with the 6412's performance have made the backup practice 2nd nature.  Every other episode of Desperate Housewives completely loses audio. Now, when that happens, my wife and I just groan, change inputs on the tv, and continue watching it on the Tivo.

I've just added an expensive toy...the new HD series 3 Tivo.  Haven't had Comcast out yet to install the cable-cards, (they told me 2 weeks), but using basic cable and over-the-air antenna connections, I've duplicated almost everything we watch on the 6412, HD and all.   Been perfectly flawless so far.   Probably won't be long before I dump the 6412.  It has been a wonder, being able to watch all the shows in HD, but its also been annoyingly cranky and undependable.  It has some superior features, but its hard to accept its failings.

Re: Lost recordings

I, for one, would like to know more about your experience with the HD TiVo when you get it going with your Comcast feed. Since my Series 1 broke and I got a Series 2, I've fallen deeply in love with it's ability to stream programs (and MP3s) from my computer.  Of course, I would not download the XVID version of a show, convert it to MPEG2 with MP2 audio using GUI4FFMPEG and watch it on the TiVo rather than recording and watching analog cable. I do hear that's what people do, though.
